Welcome to Ms. Matthews's Teacher Page

Welcome to music class! I was born and raised in San Francisco and Oakland. I’ve studied and played many instruments including: voice, clarinet, recorder, guitar, ukulele, piano, drums and violin. I’ve played and performed in many ensembles and bands both in classical and in popular music genres. I love teaching children songs from around the world which include many folk songs and traditional pieces. In addition to teaching, I sing professionally as well. I’ve sung with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, professional groups for recording music for movie/video games and I also have my own blues/rock band that I perform with locally. I live in Castro Valley and love working with the San Lorenzo students!

I'm inspired by many artists and educators but after studying in graduate school, I’ve developed a true appreciation for Zoltan Kodaly’s methodology known as the Kodaly Method. Kodaly wrote and composed valuable educational articles and music for children. He created a whole concept on how to teach children music that I diligently try to model in my own teaching.

My two favorite Kodaly quotes:

“Let us take our children seriously! Everything else follows from this … only the best if good enough for a child.”

“There is no complete spiritual life without music, for the human soul has regions which can be illuminated only by music.”

I graduated from San Francisco State University in Classical Voice for Music Education and continued my education there to receive my teaching credential. In 2017, I graduated from Holy Names University with my Masters in Music Education with the Kodaly Emphasis.
